Work for someone who appreciates your ideas, loyalty and hard work.

I worked for a company for 3 years and only got two interviews for internal jobs, I applied for. I never got promoted even though I was acting in the position. One day I applied to another company, and was offered an amazing opportunity and within 6 months, they gave me a promotion. I ended up getting “Employee of the Year”. My old boss asked me to come back for the same promotion. I told him, “Thanks, but no thanks.”

As I look back, I am thankful for all the rejection I received from my previous boss. It was a blessing in disguise. Rejection hurts but don’t dwell on it or take it personally. If you focus on positive thinking, even the harshest defeat is only a stepping-stone. So if you didn’t get the job or promotion, don’t let it affect your self-worth, just think of it as. “I am not being rejected, I am being redirected to something better!” Why would you want to work for a someone who does not appreciate your talents, hard-work or loyalty?

Life is too short to put up with a job you dislike or a boss who treats you poorly. No amount of money can compensate for a toxic culture.

Work for someone who appreciates your ideas, loyalty and hard work. Even if it means working for yourself.

Too many of us are hanging around in places, relationships, jobs where we are not being valued – where the life is literally being sucked out of us. Why? Because of fear or lack of confidence in ourselves and in our abilities. We convince ourselves that we can stay in a job that makes us unhappy because we need the income, or because we don’t believe we can find another job. But the truth is spending too much of it in a bad situation will make you miserable and it can affect your health.

Working in an environment where you are merely tolerated will only hold you back. If you dread Mondays, and the high point of your working experience is Friday or payday, then perhaps it’s time to start looking at other companies or perhaps starting your own business. The biggest challenge we all face throughout our career is to be brave enough to walk away when our loyalty and hard work are taken for granted. Speaking from experience, it’s a scary decision.

Change is scary, but there are really great positions/great companies out there. Have confidence in your skills and abilities. Know your worth. Even when the current situation tries to make you think otherwise. Network, volunteer and learn new skills. Start taking small steps to where you want to be. You deserve so much better!

  1. Thanks Brigette for everything you do. I work in a place where i dread Mondays and look forward to Fridays. I am a lawyer but along the line i discovered i have passion for people; that started my journey into developing my “HR skill”… boss has talked me down countless times. She even said to me last month to go and read the book of Habakkuk, that she doesnt think my HR vision is for now; maybe later.

She uses words that has made me to question my very existence. In less than 2 months i have had High BP twice and severe backache but still i am been treated like God did not create me.

    All will be well…

    1. Never let anyone treat you that way. Make up you mind. If HR is what you have passion for then either quit your law job and focus on the HR passion or make the HR passion your number 1 priority and the law job second place. All the best and take care of your health.

  2. Great article. There are many other hidden issues which may not come to surface when bosses are adamant in their thinking

  3. I fully agreed what you are writing, i am facing the same issues, but life has to be going on.
Just hope that one of these day someone who need my talent open their door to me.

  4. Bridgette,

    Let’s start a movement.
I am looking for advice how to turn all of the comments from hard working dedicated people into ACTION.

I have been following so many posts, article and people in this position at so many organizations.
Staying quiet, going to work and pretending everything is great with toxic leaders impossible and catastrophic to our health.
If a situation or encounter is not ok, then everyone should be allowed to have a voice. If something in an organization is broken then management and leaders need to listen.
Expecting co-workers, peers, team members or direst reports to pretend everything is ok and never raise concerns is completely unacceptable. Then even more defeating issue is being courageous, providing feedback and then being retaliated against.
Let’s start a movement to find a voice for change in the workplace.
Any ideas or comments are welcome.

  5. Hi,

I appreciated a lot this article. The more we stick to a work we don’t feel our value In It, the more It becomes difficult for us to leave.

  6. I have been reminded of what I slowly started to forget. It is so satisfying when you deliver value that is appreciated. It hurts when all the hard work is complemented by harsh and unprofessional replies.

    Thanks Bridgette.

  7. I got to know there are 2000+ recruitment agencies ( In UAE). Are all people aware of this. Real help is missing as money is everyone’s priority. Employees have no courage to go through tough HR processes of various types of interviews (type of a trauma) and get rejected due to different factors. Need quick solutions to help Govt. (of India) to solve unemployment issues by bringing awareness of getting schools, colleges, academy connected to companies (Pvt. and Govt.) so that each student gets a right kind of job meant for him/her. On job training if given more importance than HR complications, it will be another solution for unemployment. Companies collaborating with other companies can hire candidates according to their skill and qualification/experience so that no candidate is unemployed any more. This way we can spread happiness for families who are dependent on candidates looking for job.

  8. Never allow anyone to devalue you

Everyone has a gift, skill, or talent to share with the world – discover yours and go change the world

In God’s eyes, we are all stars — we just shine differently

  9. Thanks for the beautiful article,
    Dear All,
This is very true in maximum cases people also think about difficult situations in the new job but its ok if you face chalange s in new job .
But this is dam true that you will learn many new things which will help you in future.

  10. Thank you Brigette for this.
I am currently in this state of work where my 100% loyalty, commitment and trust are being questioned.
Harsh and words uncalled-for emanating from my Boss
    This affected my blood pressure.
And lately I decided to resign from this appointment to save my health, recover my self esteem and reposition myself for greater opportunities elsewhere.
Even though no job in sight currently, just wanted to nding my 1 month notice period, I am happy I took the earlier decision.
    Better job will hit me.

  11. Thank you Brigette.
This is currently me now where I work even with my strong commitment to my Job I still get insulted and warning letters plus suspension from my boss in return.

It got to a point where I was almost hit by a car due to over thinking but I promise my self to quite the Job today. As it is affecting my health negatively.

Even salaries are been owned two days back I asked my boss for salary and she told me that ” I should not annoy her with what I just said “it been a struggle for me with my current Job and also unbearable because I just finished the university and having the first experience working in a toxic environment is real hell. I pray I get something better very soon.

  12. Wonderful article and meaningful also!!
But I just want to know , whether upon reading such books, will boss/reporting manager gets changed.
Whether such articles affects such persons ??
If it is , then I can assume that this article is of Worth!!

  13. Thank you Brigette,
There’s no better way to write on this topic than you have done. Sincerely, many are going through hell but cases differs and the truth is that majority has a talent and gift as per ways to deal with it but the fear of unknown couple with strategies to deal with it in order not to end up in a worst situation than the one you are trying to prevent.
In my own case, I don’t mind having a harsh working conditions but are my learning and gaining experience such that I can put that experience to starting a personal business or working somewhere else in the nearest future. Truth be told , we all need to endure a certain situation which may not work for us in the course of life as expected but getting stuck without way out is what you should all quickly prevent.
One of my strategies is that I look for back up skills to make sure I’m able to deliver value at anytime no matter how busy my engagement in my current job may be. This is particularly important if you work in an unstructured Organisation like me. (I mean unstructured because there’s no pension plan, medical and other basic future benefits ).
Everyone must be smart enough to deal with his situation before you regret it by setting your priorities base on the situation. If you value money or position at the expense of your health, that may be your most valued priority.

  14. There is no failure except in no longer trying.” can give a try with your boss…. Quiting never be a solution for such kind of situation

  15. This article is very timely. It describes exactly what I am experiencing with my current employer. Thank you so much! I truly needed to read this today.

  16. I just walked out of my employment after 3 months of working there. The hr told me on my last day not to include the name of the company in my future job applications as it will ruin my trust with other employers. And i blatantly told her, but the same employers knows i have been here for 3 months but they still gave me the offer!!!‍♀️

  17. Great article.. Highly motivated.. I am a teacher by profession and i have suffered the same atmosphere in my school. I prayed to Allah for the help. I met an accident on one morning when i was on the way to school. I got my left leg bone broken and my school management did not help me in any way but ask for the resignation which i mailed to them… Simultaneouly i started giving online tutions to O level students as my own work . I am feeling now much relaxed and contented that my Allah helped me to take me out of the stressed and tensed atmosphere of the school in which i always feel down and in pressure.. I pray my Allah to help everyone in the world to have a relaxed and honourable income. Ameen

  18. The reason why you got employee of the year in your new job was because your old boss’s rejection made you work extra hard to prove worthiness and you had unconsciously sharpened above expected or general standard which he still didn’t appreciate. So when you got into your new job, you appeared to have supernatural abilities.

  19. Very good Article its make motivation for readers. and also say thanks for all who are given their best real life experience.

  20. Good Evening,

When I read this article, it brought home so many aspects of my current situation. Everything in this article HAPPENED to me. Health deterioration, past up for promotions, boss doesn’t even say speak back when I greet her so the rest is obvious and I have dreams of starting my own company. I can’t see where some of my decisions may take me in the near future, but one things for sure, it can’t be any worse than my current situation of SUFFERING. Thank you!
